Bappenas launches Indonesia Blue Carbon Roadmap 2026–2045

The Indonesian National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) has launched the Blue Carbon Ecosystem Protection and Management Roadmap for 2026–2045. This long-term guide aims to integrate the protection and utilization of coastal ecosystems into cross-sectoral development planning.

Bappenas Head Rachmat Pambudy has called for ministries and agencies to align this roadmap with annual planning through 2029. The strategy focuses on five key pillars: integrated national and regional policies, strengthening data and scientific research through international measurement and verification standards, developing diverse and fair funding schemes, and empowering local communities to ensure sustainable management.

Indonesia possesses significant blue carbon potential, including approximately 3.44 million hectares of mangroves and 1.84 million hectares of seagrass beds. Beyond carbon sequestration, these ecosystems provide coastal protection and support fisheries. Experts from DNIKS emphasize that the roadmap should ensure blue carbon serves as a social welfare asset rather than just a carbon credit asset, ensuring economic benefits return to coastal communities and ecosystem regeneration.
