Bappisus outlines two main agendas to reform Indonesian prisons
Aries Marsudiyanto, head of the Special Development Control and Investigation Agency (Bappisus), has identified two primary agendas to address issues within Indonesia’s correctional facilities: improving prison governance and managing overcrowding.
Following a ministerial coordination meeting led by Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Correctional Affairs Yusril Ihza Mahendra, the proposed reforms will focus on infrastructure and human resources. Marsudiyanto noted that both the quality and quantity of prison staff need improvement, as current numbers are insufficient.
Operational reforms aim to eliminate illegal transactions and unlawful activities within prisons to ensure personal interests do not interfere with inmate welfare. Additionally, logistical improvements will target inmate health, including food quality, clean water access, and recreational facilities. The findings from these discussions will be presented to President Prabowo Subianto for further implementation.
