Captain Smit Machchhar thwarts mid-air attack on Flydubai flight

Captain Smit Machchhar, an Indian pilot for Flydubai, is recovering in Abu Dhabi after a violent mid-air attack by his Omani co-pilot, Hamam al-Hammami, on flight FZ1073. The incident occurred on September 30 during a flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv.

Investigators report that al-Hammami attacked Machchhar with a crash axe, causing a depressed skull fracture, vision damage, and memory loss. The co-pilot allegedly attempted to disable the aircraft engines and autopilot, causing the plane to drop from 33,000 to 17,000 feet. Reports suggest the attacker intended to crash the Boeing 737 into a skyscraper in Tel Aviv, Ben Gurion Airport, or a US military base in Jordan.

Despite his severe injuries, Captain Machchhar managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers and crew to intervene and overpower the attacker. The aircraft was diverted and landed safely in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, with all 174 passengers and crew surviving.

Global leaders, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UAE Deputy Prime Minister Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, have praised Machchhar's heroism. Israeli Ambassador Reuven Azar noted the attack appeared to target the diplomatic stability of the Abraham Accords. Al-Hammami remains in custody as investigations continue.
