Baptist Health reduces emergency room boarding using AI

Baptist Health in Arkansas has successfully reduced emergency department boarding by approximately 525 patients per month. According to Greg Brown, associate system vice president, the health system utilized predictive AI and a patient command center to address bottlenecks and improve patient throughput across its 12 hospitals.

While emergency room congestion is a widespread issue, officials note that boarding often stems from inefficiencies in medical-surgical and ICU units rather than the emergency department itself. The implementation of these new processes has improved discharge processing times and the ability to accept patient transfers.

Separately, discussions regarding emergency department pressure highlight the legal complexities of medical malpractice. In high-stress environments, failures such as missed symptoms of stroke or sepsis, medication errors, or improper patient discharge can lead to negligence claims, particularly when avoidable mistakes occur during periods of high patient volume.
