Bar Association of Sri Lanka condemns unfilled Supreme Court vacancies

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has criticized President Anura Kumara Dissanayake for failing to fill vacancies in the Supreme Court. The association claims this delay causes injustice to senior judicial officers.

Specifically, the BASL noted that Justice Ganepola, a Senior Justice of the Court of Appeal, has been denied elevation to the Supreme Court despite eligibility. The association also highlighted that the career prospects of Justice R. Gurusinghe have been negatively impacted by the lack of appointments.

The BASL warned that prolonged vacancies undermine the integrity and efficiency of the country's highest court, potentially placing an excessive burden on sitting justices and delaying the resolution of fundamental rights petitions and other critical cases.
