Bar Beach shooting teen avoids jail after filming himself with gun
Ja'Rell Warren De Jong, a 19‑year‑old, was charged for filming himself holding a pistol in the back seat of a stolen Volvo about an hour before two other men opened fire at Bar Beach in Newcastle. The two men, Decklen Deaves‑Thornton (22) and Jack Kennedy (25), have been charged with murder in the death of 18‑year‑old Ekampreet Singh Sahni, who was shot in the chest and died at the scene on 23 April.
De Jong was the third person charged in relation to the incident after investigators seized several mobile‑phone videos showing him with a silver revolver on 15 April and a 30‑30 calibre rifle on 16 April. In August of the previous year he was formally charged. In a recent court decision the teen avoided a jail term, while the two accused gunmen await further hearings.
The shooting took place in the Bar Beach car park on Memorial Drive, after a fight broke out in the area. Police say the accused used a rifle to jab the victim before delivering a fatal shot.
