Bar Jamaica price hikes after 6 pm spark transparency debate in Milan
The historic Bar Jamaica in Milan’s Brera district faced public scrutiny after a receipt showed a 6‑euro bottle of water. The venue operates two service models – a restaurant menu and a bar menu – and applies higher prices after 18:00. Under Italian law, such price variations are permissible provided they are clearly communicated to the customer before ordering.
Owner Micaela Mainini explained that the water bottle was 0.75 L and priced according to the bar menu. Consumer‑rights experts, including Alessandro Klun, Massimiliano Dona and Lino Enrico Stoppani, stressed that the consumer code forbids misleading or omitted information, requiring transparent signage of any surcharge. The episode has reignited discussion on price‑list transparency in Italian hospitality venues.
