Bara authorities and victim's family reach agreement to end protests

Protests in Bara have been suspended following a five-point agreement between the family of three-year-old Garima Chaudhary and local authorities. The agreement was reached after the child was raped and murdered in Jitpur Simara Sub-Metropolitan City on August 18.

The deal includes recommendations to the Ministry of Home Affairs to provide relief and employment support to the victim’s family. It also addresses demands for accountability regarding security personnel accused of negligence during the initial investigation. While suspects are currently in custody, authorities pledged strict legal action against any further accomplices identified.

Home Minister Sudan Gurung stated that ensuring justice for the victim is a top government priority. He confirmed that four additional people have been arrested following complaints from the parents. Addressing calls for the death penalty, Gurung noted that Article 16(2) of the Constitution prohibits capital punishment, but announced that a draft amendment is being prepared to remove legal barriers in cases of serious crimes against women and children.
