Barack Obama calls Libya intervention aftermath his worst mistake

Fifteen years after the NATO-led intervention that ended Muammar Gaddafi’s rule, Barack Obama has identified the aftermath of the Libyan intervention as the “worst mistake” of his presidency. While defending the initial military action as a necessary step to prevent large-scale civilian casualties and a prolonged civil war, Obama noted that the failure to prepare for the “day after” the intervention led to the current state of chaos in Libya.

The collapse of the Libyan state has triggered a significant shift in North African security dynamics. Regional powers have spent over $320 billion to modernize their militaries, acquiring advanced combat aircraft, drones, missile systems, and naval vessels to avoid similar vulnerabilities. Algeria and Morocco have emerged as the primary importers of major conventional weapons in the region as North Africa enters a highly militarized era.
