Barack Obama Elementary School closes indefinitely due to mold
Barack Obama Elementary School in Richmond, Virginia, has been closed indefinitely following the discovery of significant mold growth and reports of rodents within the building. Richmond Public Schools (RPS) officials ordered an immediate evacuation after staff and parents identified mold on classroom items, including laptops and music equipment, as well as growth behind bulletin boards.
Superintendent Jason Kamras stated that the district will perform antimicrobial fogging and thorough re-cleaning before retesting every room in the school. The closure comes just as the new school year was set to begin. To minimize disruption, the district is preparing Clark Springs Elementary School to serve as a temporary location for students, potentially for the first quarter of the school year.
Richmond City School Board member Ali Faruk attributed the mold issues to a combination of a malfunctioning HVAC system, a leaking pipe, and unusually high heat and humidity over the summer months. The school, which was renamed from J.E.B. Stuart in 2018, has faced these sanitation challenges just days after reports of rodent sightings in several rooms.
