Barack Obama suggests women in leadership would improve global governance

Former President Barack Obama sparked online debate following remarks made during a conversation with historian Doris Kearns Goodwin at Salem State University. Obama stated that he believes global governance would be improved if women were in charge of every government for a two-year period, noting, “I have a strong belief that things — they wouldn't be perfect — but they'd be better.”

During the event, Obama also addressed the need for generational leadership shifts. He commented on the challenges of older leaders clinging to power due to a fear of irrelevance. These comments drew criticism from conservative commentators, some of whom pointed to his past political support for older leaders as a contradiction.

Additionally, Obama discussed the current state of American democracy, suggesting that while the country faces significant divisions and a mean-spirited political tone, the nation is not as polarized at the grassroots level as media and political discourse might suggest.
