Barahona hosts first Larimar Direct Sales Fair to support local artisans
The Dominican Republic's Ministry of Energy and Mines held the first Larimar Direct Sales Fair in Barahona to connect mining producers directly with artisans, designers, and buyers. The event featured 12 producers who offered 15,000 pounds of raw larimar stone.
Sales results from the fair included the purchase of 255.16 pounds of raw stone, 7,057.90 grams of semi-processed material, and nearly 40,000 grams of finished jewelry and crafts. Golye Latouff, Director of Mining Promotion, stated that the availability of stone at the fair proves that exports have not depleted the supply for local artisans.
Additionally, Mining Director General Rolando Muñoz reported that preliminary studies indicate the larimar-bearing area in the Bahoruco district could potentially quadruple in size. Drilling is currently underway to quantify these resources. The stone, exclusive to Barahona, holds an International Registration of Designation of Origin granted by the World Intellectual Property Organization.
