Mencía Primary School intruder arrested in Barahona

An armed man, identified as Argenis Ferreras, entered the Mencía Primary School in Paraíso, Barahona, on Monday afternoon, causing panic among students and staff. According to school director Joselin Lebrón, the intruder entered the premises by climbing a tree and was armed with a machete. Witnesses also reported the possible presence of a concealed handgun, though authorities have not officially confirmed this.

During the incident, which occurred around 1:13 PM, the intruder allegedly threatened to kill Lebrón and reportedly attempted to strike a student with a stone. The event caused significant distress among the school's approximately 800 students, many of whom were left in tears or fled in fear. As a result of the incident, school attendance dropped sharply on Tuesday, with only about 102 students attending classes.

The Ministry of Education (MINERD) has announced that School Police will be deployed to the campus to monitor the situation. Director Lebrón intends to file a formal complaint following the incident. Investigations are ongoing to clarify the circumstances, including reports that the intruder may have been motivated by a dispute involving students allegedly damaging property at his residence.
