Barahona shooting leaves one dead as companion surrenders
A man known as ‘El Burro’ was killed in an apparent shooting in an agricultural area between the municipalities of Cabral and Fundación in the Barahona province. The incident occurred in the Las Elenas zone while the victim and his companion were reportedly transporting sacks of plantains on horseback.
Franklin Cuevas Pérez, alias ‘Gibaro’, the man who was accompanying the victim, survived the attack and has since surrendered to the National Police. He was turned over to authorities by a local human rights representative and a municipal councilor. Cuevas Pérez arrived at the police station unharmed and has requested protection.
Preliminary reports suggest the two men may have been confronted by farmers while allegedly attempting to take agricultural products and animals, though the National Police have not officially confirmed these allegations. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances of the death and the identity of those responsible for the shooting.
