Baranagar woman's death sparks protests and arrests

Tensions flared in the Baranagar area of North 24 Parganas, West Bengal, following the discovery of Riya Pal's body hanging in her home on Sunday. While her husband, Manas Das, claimed she committed suicide after finding the door locked from the inside, local residents disputed this account and staged protests.

Police arrested the woman's husband and mother-in-law following preliminary questioning. The arrests triggered unrest, leading to confrontations between neighbors and police, which reportedly required a lathi charge to restore order.

A senior official from the Barrackpore Police Commissionerate stated that a case has been registered under relevant legal sections. The investigation is ongoing, and the exact cause of death will be determined once the post-mortem report is released. The situation in Baranagar has since returned to normal.
