Barbados health officials report rise in respiratory illnesses
Health officials in Barbados have reported a spike in respiratory illnesses, including influenza A, influenza B, rhinovirus, and several cases of COVID-19. Chief Medical Officer Dr. Kenneth George stated that while the increase in influenza aligns with seasonal trends, the pressure on the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) is also driven by other factors.
Contributing pressures include uncontrolled non-communicable diseases, an aging population, extended hospital stays for elderly patients, and an increase in road traffic accidents and severe trauma. Dr. George urged citizens to seek early medical attention from primary care physicians or polyclinics to improve health outcomes.
Residents are encouraged to take precautions, such as managing chronic conditions and seeking early intervention, to mitigate the strain on the healthcare system.
