Barbados mourns educator Dame Avisene Carrington

Barbados is mourning the death of renowned educator Dame Avisene Carrington, who passed away shortly after celebrating her 108th birthday. Prime Minister Mia Mottley led the tributes, describing the educator as “one of the brightest lights this country has ever known.”

Mottley reflected on her personal connection to Carrington, noting that she served as the Prime Minister's principal at Merrivale Preparatory School. The Prime Minister praised Carrington's dedication to her students, recalling how she would often sacrifice her own lunch breaks to provide extra assistance to pupils in need.

Carrington's biography, written by her daughter-in-law Hazel Lindo-Carrington, is titled “Simply Teacher,” reflecting the educator's desire to be remembered for her lifelong service to education.
