Dakar 2026 Youth Olympics preparations underway in Senegal

Senegal is set to host the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games from October 31 to November 13, marking the first time an Olympic event will be held on the African continent. Approximately 2,700 athletes from 206 delegations are expected to participate across 25 sports.

As preparations conclude, Human Rights Watch has raised concerns regarding the treatment of LGBTQ+ individuals in Senegal. The organization documented mass arrests, alleged forced HIV testing, and increased legal penalties for consensual same-sex conduct following recent parliamentary amendments to the penal code. These developments have reportedly caused fear and prompted some individuals to flee the country.

Various nations have announced their delegations for the event. Morocco will send 39 athletes competing in 17 disciplines, while Peru will be represented by 15 athletes across 11 disciplines. Barbados has named a three-member team competing in judo, swimming, and triathlon, and Saint Lucia will send three members to compete in aquatics and athletics.
