Barbados officials warn of extreme heat and rising health risks

Extreme heat conditions are persisting across Barbados, with apparent temperatures reaching approximately 45°C. The Barbados Meteorological Services reports that while daytime maximum temperatures are peaking between 32°C and 33°C in some districts, urban and western areas are seeing higher readings. These hot conditions are expected to continue through September and into November.

The Barbados Association of Retired Persons (BARP) has issued specific warnings for older residents, noting that aging bodies may not respond to heat as efficiently. BARP President Marilyn Rice-Bowen advised seniors to drink water regularly, avoid prolonged outdoor activity during peak hours, and wear light-colored, loose clothing. Families and neighbors are encouraged to check on elderly individuals living alone to prevent heat exhaustion, dehydration, and heat stroke.

Additionally, the World Meteorological Organisation has warned of a strengthening El Niño system that could persist through early 2027, potentially leading to further temperature extremes.
