Barbados reports strong passport mobility and tourism growth

Barbados is seeing significant developments in both travel mobility and tourism sector performance. The country currently ranks 39th globally in the latest passport mobility index, placing it first within CARICOM and tenth among the 56 Commonwealth nations. The Barbadian passport allows visa-free entry to over 100 countries, including full access across Europe and the Caribbean. However, the report notes a lack of reciprocity, as Barbadians face strict visa requirements for several nations that offer them easier entry, such as the United States, Australia, Qatar, and New Zealand.

In the tourism sector, the Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association (BHTA) reported growth in key markets during the first half of 2026. The United States remains the largest source market with 123,282 visitors, representing a 33.8 per cent market share. Canada saw a 13.7 per cent increase in arrivals, while Europe recorded the fastest growth rate at 20.1 per cent. Conversely, visitor numbers from the United Kingdom declined by 9.8 per cent, and Caribbean arrivals fell by 11.4 per cent.

Looking ahead, airlift capacity at Grantley Adams International Airport is projected to increase, with an expected 1.6 million seats across 13,111 flights for the period of September 2026 to August 2027. British Airways is scheduled to increase its capacity by more than 71 per cent.
