Barbados roots linked to the founding of Charleston
The founding of Charleston, South Carolina, has deep historical roots in Barbados. In 1670, English settlers and enslaved African-Americans departed from Speightstown, Barbados, landing at Albemarle Point in the Carolina Colony.
During the first three years of the colony, more than half of the settlers and enslaved individuals arrived from Barbados. This migration brought the Barbadian plantation model, along with specific agricultural knowledge and practices, to the region. David Baker, park manager at Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site, noted that the English settlers who established the colony arrived via Barbados rather than directly from England.
