The Barbados government announced that a state funeral for national hero Sir Garfield Sobers, the former West Indies cricket captain who died at age 89, will be held on July 29. The public Thanksgiving service will begin at 10:00 a.m. on the historic Kensington Oval, followed by a private burial at Coral Ridge Memorial Gardens in Christ Church.

Sobers' body will lie in state for two days—July 27 at Parliament and July 28 at the Hospitality Suite of Kensington Oval. Condolence books will be placed at multiple venues, including Parliament, Kensington Oval, cricket venues and post offices, with electronic options available for those abroad. The ceremony will be livestreamed.

Senior Minister Senator Lisa Cummins and Cabinet Secretary Selma Green detailed the arrangements, emphasizing Sobers' legacy as one of cricket's greatest all‑rounders and his deep connection to Barbados.
