Barbara Nowacka faces scrutiny over linguistic error

Polish Minister of National Education Barbara Nowacka has drawn scrutiny following a linguistic slip during a public event. While attempting to describe her role, Nowacka hesitated when using the word ‘gościni’ (female guest) and instead suggested the term ‘gospodarki’ (economy/management) in an attempt to find a more ‘agentic’ form.

Linguists and commentators have analyzed the incident. Dr. Artur Czesak, a linguist from Jagiellonian University, characterized the event as a minor slip of the tongue that Nowacka failed to navigate smoothly, noting that she incorrectly referred to the process as ‘declension’ rather than ‘derivation.’

The incident has sparked a broader discussion regarding the use of English loanwords and modern linguistic shifts in Poland. Some commentators suggest the avoidance of traditional terms like ‘gospodyni’ (hostess) may be an attempt to avoid gendered connotations, while others view the linguistic trend as a way to signal social status through the use of modern or foreign-influenced terminology.
