Barbate reopens Playa del Carmen after wastewater discharge

Playa del Carmen in Barbate has reopened for swimming without restrictions following a four-day period of water quality concerns. The restrictions, which began on Thursday, August 20, were triggered by the discharge of wastewater and debris from river overflows caused by heavy rainfall.

While the local government implemented preventive measures and sand cleaning efforts, the situation lasted through the weekend. Although the warning flag changed from red to yellow on Sunday, a formal recommendation against entering the water remained in place until Monday, August 24, when recent analyses confirmed favorable water quality results.

The incident has prompted political fallout. The PSOE party has announced plans to request an information file regarding Aqualia, the water service concessionaire, to determine the exact cause of the discharge. The party is also preparing an external technical report and intends to call for a hearing with Mayor Miguel Molina to clarify the circumstances of the event during the peak August season.
