Barbera Thornhill appointed U.S. Ambassador to combat human trafficking
Barbera Thornhill has been appointed as the U.S. Ambassador-at-Large to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons. A businesswoman and philanthropist from Los Angeles, Thornhill previously received a nomination for ambassador to Singapore in 2019 that was not realized.
Following the official announcement by Assistant Secretary Riley Barnes on social media, Thornhill's official portrait became a viral sensation. Rather than focusing on her diplomatic role, much of the online discourse centered on her physical appearance. Social media users engaged in widespread speculation regarding her looks, with some questioning if the image was digitally altered or satirical, while others compared her to other public figures or engaged in discussions regarding cosmetic procedures.
Despite the online controversy, the State Department emphasized the importance of the role, noting that human trafficking is a grave transnational crime. Thornhill's mission involves coordinating international policy, protecting survivors, and pursuing justice against traffickers.
