Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto civic movement demands sewage network repairs
The civic movement ‘Città Aperta’ is calling for urgent repairs to the sewage network in Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto to prevent waste from being discharged into the sea. The group highlighted that these malfunctions are recurring issues that pose a threat to public health, tourism, and the local economy, particularly during the peak summer tourist season.
Città Aperta is demanding greater transparency regarding recent marine water monitoring results ordered by the Mayor, which have not yet been made public. The movement argues that water monitoring should be a constant, scheduled, and structured year-round activity rather than an extraordinary measure taken only during crises.
To address the root causes, the movement proposes mapping the sewage network, verifying purification systems, and identifying illegal discharges. They are also calling for the Mayor to establish a permanent technical committee involving neighboring municipalities and relevant authorities to tackle sea pollution as a regional issue.
