Barcelona riots lead to 128 arrests and widespread vandalism FAST-MOVING

Violent unrest erupted in central Barcelona on Saturday, October 24, following a youth protest inspired by student movements in France. The demonstration, organized via social media under the slogan ‘Instituts Indignats’, drew approximately 600 participants to the Plaza de Catalunya area.

The gathering escalated into clashes between masked youths and law enforcement, resulting in 128 arrests, of which 72 are minors. Authorities reported that 14 police officers were injured, with four sustaining serious wounds. The rioters engaged in looting, setting fire to at least 31 waste containers, and damaging urban furniture. At least 23 businesses were vandalized or looted, including a major department store.

Barcelona Mayor Jaume Collboni condemned the ‘gratuitous violence’ and vowed that those responsible, including the guardians of minors, would face legal consequences. Catalan Interior Minister Núria Parlon described the incidents as vandalism, while regional President Salvador Illa stated that those behind the unrest would be held accountable. The unrest also caused significant disruptions to public transport and required 33 interventions by firefighters to manage various blazes.
