La Liga: Barcelona and Real Madrid to miss opening round

Barcelona and Real Madrid will miss the opening round of the 2026-2027 La Liga season due to a scheduling agreement between the league and the Spanish Footballers' Association (AFE). The decision follows the 2026 World Cup, ensuring that players who reached the semi-finals receive a mandatory rest period.

Under the agreement, players from nations like Spain, France, England, and Argentina are entitled to sufficient recovery time. Consequently, Barcelona’s opening match against Athletic Bilbao has been moved to August 27, while Real Madrid’s scheduled match against Real Sociedad will now take place on August 26.

Real Madrid will instead make their season debut on August 22 against Espanyol, and Barcelona will play Elche on August 23. This adjustment aims to protect player health and comply with collective bargaining agreements regarding rest after deep tournament runs. Other clubs, such as Atletico Madrid, have opted to proceed with their opening fixtures as scheduled.
