Barcelona and Sarajevo mayors discuss new partnership and violence prevention

The mayors of Sarajevo and Barcelona are moving to deepen the long-standing relationship between their two cities. During an official visit to Sarajevo, Barcelona Mayor Jaume Collboni met with Sarajevo Mayor Samir Avdić to discuss formalizing cooperation through a new agreement.

Key areas for future partnership include culture, education, sports, green policies, and leveraging their shared status as Olympic cities. The discussions aim to transition the relationship from historical solidarity—rooted in the friendship formed during the siege of Sarajevo—into a modern partnership focused on concrete joint projects.

Additionally, officials in Sarajevo are looking to Barcelona’s systemic approaches to combating domestic and gender-based violence. The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Sarajevo Canton is planning a new central facility that will include a dedicated department for preventing domestic violence, seeking to implement successful models and experiences shared by Barcelona.
