Barcelona assault leaves 21-year-old Italian tourist in medically induced coma
Nicola Maggiotto, a 21-year-old from Asolo, Italy, is in a medically induced coma at a Barcelona hospital following a violent assault. The incident occurred on the night of August 12, 2026, outside the Sea Sea Beach club in the Port Fòrum area of Sant Adrià de Besòs.
According to witnesses and friends, Maggiotto was vacationing with a group of eight companions. As the group exited the club, they were approached by approximately a dozen Spanish-speaking youths. During the ensuing confrontation, Maggiotto was struck violently in the back of the head, causing him to lose consciousness. He has since been diagnosed with serious brain injuries, and his prognosis remains reserved.
A fight broke out when other members of the Italian group attempted to intervene. One friend sustained a facial injury requiring stitches but has been discharged. Authorities have noted that the attack does not appear to have been a robbery, as no personal belongings or money were stolen.
The Mossos d'Esquadra are investigating the incident and reviewing security footage to identify the perpetrators. The Italian Consulate in Barcelona is providing assistance to the family, who have traveled to Spain to be with Maggiotto.
