Barcelona court clears way for Francesc Augé’s euthanasia

An administrative court in Barcelona has archived the legal case preventing the euthanasia of Francesc Augé. The decision follows a formal withdrawal by Augé’s father, who had previously filed appeals to block the assisted death.

The Generalitat authorized Augé’s request for dignified death in August 2024. Augé, 56, suffers from severe movement and speech impairments resulting from three strokes and two heart attacks. While the regional government had approved the procedure, his father’s legal opposition had stalled the process for over two years.

Following a written statement by the father on October 1 to cease the judicial battle, a magistrate issued an order to terminate the proceedings. Although a five-day window remains for any parties to file an appeal, such a move is considered unlikely.
