Barcelona Declines to Sign World Cup Winning Defender Aymeric Laporte

Barcelona have decided against signing Spain centre‑back Aymeric Laporte despite his key role in Spain's 2026 FIFA World Cup triumph, where he formed a defensive partnership with Pau Cubarsi and helped the team concede only one goal. Manager Hansi Flick believes the club already has sufficient quality in central defence, citing players such as Gerard Martín, Eric Garcia, Andreas Christensen, Jules Koundé, Álvaro Cortés and Ronald Araujo, and expects Andreas Christensen to feature more prominently next season.

A transfer for Laporte would also be complicated because he is under contract with Athletic Bilbao until 2028 and has no release clause, requiring direct negotiations with the Basque club. After a contentious pursuit of Nico Williams in previous years, Barcelona prefer to avoid another potentially hostile deal and are focusing their remaining budget on attacking reinforcements.
