Barcelona expands urban signage to honor historical figures and events
The Barcelona City Council has expanded its democratic memory signage project, which has been active since 2016. The initiative uses circular blue plaques to honor notable figures who lived in specific buildings, such as architect Oriol Bohigas and urbanist Ildefons Cerdà in the Eixample district.
In addition to individual plaques, the city utilizes multilingual lecterns to commemorate historical events. These include explanations of the Italian fascist aviation bombing in Sant Felip Neri plaza and the 1987 ETA attack. According to city data, there are currently 96 plaques and 57 lecterns installed or in process.
