Athletic Bilbao blocks Barcelona and Real Madrid's bid for Aymeric Laporte with €80 million clause

Spanish centre‑back Aymeric Laporte, 32, who helped Spain win the 2026 World Cup, remains under contract with Athletic Bilbao until June 2028. The Basque club has set his release clause at €80 million, a price that both FC Barcelona and Real Madrid consider prohibitive.

Barcelona’s sporting director Deco formally inquired about Laporte during the tournament, but Athletic responded that the clause is non‑negotiable. Real Madrid have also been linked to the defender, though no official offer has been made. The high valuation follows Laporte’s return to Athletic from Al‑Nassr for €10 million and his standout World Cup performances, which have raised his market profile.

With the €80 million demand, both clubs appear likely to look elsewhere for defensive reinforcements, and Athletic Bilbao is expected to retain Laporte for the upcoming La Liga season.
