Barcelona housing construction falls short of electoral promises

Barcelona has seen the construction of only 5,000 new homes, significantly lower than the 40,000 units promised during the electoral campaign. This shortfall is attributed to a lack of available land in the consolidated city and a real estate market that prioritizes investment funds and speculative strategies over social needs.

Despite the demand for an estimated 30,000 affordable homes, current urban planning is criticized as being strategically empty and lacking effective management. Critics argue that existing municipal and regional plans function more as legal regulations than as actionable urban strategies, failing to address demographic growth or housing instability.
