Barcelona housing crisis highlighted by public figures

The housing crisis in Barcelona has gained renewed attention following testimonies from prominent figures regarding the difficulty of finding rental properties.

Television presenter Susanna Griso shared her experience of spending four months searching for a rental apartment in Barcelona despite having a steady income and a guarantor. Griso noted that the market presents significant barriers for various groups, including families with children and migrants, often requiring substantial financial guarantees. She observed that while rental prices in the city have seen a 5% decrease due to regulations, the availability of apartments has dropped by 20%, as many landlords shift to temporary or corporate rentals to bypass price caps.

Simultaneously, former Barcelona Mayor Ada Colau faced scrutiny after claiming she had to move in with relatives because she could no longer afford her rent. Reports surfaced suggesting that shortly before her announcement regarding housing instability, she had stayed at an exclusive hotel in the Costa Brava region, where nightly rates can exceed 300 euros.
