Barcelona launches digital street‑name database with 4,600 historic entries
The Barcelona City Council has unveiled a new digital platform for the city’s nomenclator, providing more than 4,600 searchable records for streets, squares, gardens and other public spaces. Each entry includes historical background, the origin of the name, the year of approval, maps, photographs and related documentation, and the site offers advanced search tools.
The portal also adds a channel for citizens to submit proposals for new names directly to the Secretariat of the Nomenclator. The initiative is part of the 2026‑2030 Strategic Plan for Democratic Memory, which aims to incorporate gender perspective and greater representation of historically under‑represented groups in public toponymy. The previous system, built two decades ago, has been replaced to improve accessibility and functionality for residents and researchers alike.
