Barcelona launches urban mobility pilot program

The Barcelona City Council has launched a technological pilot program to monitor and manage the coexistence of different mobility modes, including pedestrians, cyclists, scooters, and vehicles. Part of the European project ‘Reallocate’, the initiative uses cameras and information totems equipped with screens to collect real-time data on traffic density and flow.

The system is designed to issue warning messages to drivers when pedestrian density is high, particularly in shared-space areas. The pilot is currently active on Gran de Sant Andreu until October 4, with a subsequent phase scheduled for Consell de Cent between October 12 and October 25.

According to Chief Architect Maria Buhigas, the project aims to foster safer, more sustainable, and inclusive urban mobility. The collected data will be used to study street behaviors and inform future policy adjustments and permanent installations.
