Barcelona makes historic bid for Australian defender Lucas Herrington

Barcelona have placed a "historic" bid for 18‑year‑old Australian centre‑back Lucas Herrington, who currently plays for the Colorado Rapids in Major League Soccer. The offer was turned down by the MLS club, but the Catalan giants are expected to return with an improved proposal, reflecting their desire to bolster the defense after winning the Spanish league.

Herrington, who has featured for the Australian national team ahead of the 2026 World Cup, is valued at about €4.5 million and could become the most expensive Australian player, surpassing the £15 million record set by Harry Souttar. Besides Barcelona, clubs such as Everton and West Ham have also shown interest.

If the transfer materialises, it would mark a significant financial step for both Barcelona and Australian football, potentially raising the player's market price well above €20 million. The move would also illustrate the growing pathway from Australian and MLS clubs to top European teams.
