Barcelona mandates bicycle parking for all new residential buildings
Barcelona and its metropolitan area have implemented a new urban regulation requiring developers to reserve two parking spaces for bicycles or personal mobility vehicles (such as electric scooters) for every new residential unit built.
Approved jointly by the Àrea Metropolitana de Barcelona and the Generalitat, the mandate applies to Barcelona and 27 surrounding cities. Unlike previous regulations that did not mention bicycles, this new requirement applies to all new buildings regardless of their proximity to public transport. The measure aims to shift urban design away from car-centric models toward more sustainable mobility options. Developers and construction companies will be responsible for integrating these spaces into their building designs.
