Barcelona intensify pursuit of World Cup‑winning defender Aymeric Laporte
FC Barcelona have stepped up efforts to sign Athletic Bilbao centre‑back Aymeric Laporte, the 31‑year‑old who helped Spain win the 2026 FIFA World Cup and kept the tournament’s defence to just one goal conceded. The club’s board has opened contact with Laporte’s representatives and plans further talks, with sporting director Deco and coach Hansi Flick viewing the defender as a low‑cost, experienced addition – his release clause is reported to be below €15 million.
Laporte remains under contract with Athletic until 2028, giving the Basque side full control over any move. While Barcelona admire his leadership and tactical qualities, formal negotiations have not yet begun and relations between the clubs have been strained following recent transfer disputes. The pursuit reflects Barcelona’s desire to bolster a defence that includes young talent Pau Cubarsí, while managing financial constraints imposed by La Liga’s spending regulations.
No final agreement has been reached, but the club expects to continue discussions in the coming weeks, aiming to secure the World Cup champion before the summer transfer window closes.
