Barcelona proposes naming La Sagrera station after Pasqual Maragall

Barcelona Mayor Jaume Collboni has formally requested that the new La Sagrera railway station be named after Pasqual Maragall, the former Mayor of Barcelona and President of the Generalitat. Collboni stated that Maragall was the leader who first envisioned this northern entrance to the city during the late 1980s and early 1990s.

The proposal has been submitted to the Spanish Ministry of Transport with the knowledge of the President of the Generalitat. Maragall’s daughters have reportedly expressed their full support for the symbolic tribute. While administrative procedures are required, sources within the Ministry of Transport suggest there should be no significant issues with the request.

The La Sagrera station is expected to become one of Spain’s busiest intermodal hubs, alongside Madrid’s Atocha, with a projected 100 million passengers annually across high-speed rail, commuter trains, metro, and bus services. Construction of the underground infrastructure is nearly complete, though the station building itself, budgeted at 340 million euros, remains to be built. The project is slated for completion around 2031 or 2032.
