Barcelona protest against government demands triggers police clashes

On 25 July 2026 a public reading of the Declaración de Cádiz was held in Barcelona’s Plaza del Rey, where demonstrators called for the resignation of the Spanish government and the calling of free, safe elections. The reading was part of a series of anti‑government demonstrations organized by the activist group Menys Turisme Més Vida.

Three days later, on 28 July, police clashed with protesters as they attempted to read a manifesto at the Ses Voltes venue. Police said they were forced to defend themselves after being surrounded, while organisers claimed the force was unjustified. The confrontation left eight people injured, including photojournalist Xavi Hurtado, and ambulances were reportedly delayed for 45 minutes.
