Barcelona residents forced to alter routines due to tourism pressure
A study by the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV), published in Tourism Planning & Development, indicates that tourism pressure in Barcelona is forcing residents to alter their daily routines and mobility. The research, which utilized walk-along interviews in the Gòtic, Barceloneta, and Sagrada Família neighborhoods, found that locals are changing their routes, shopping times, and leisure activities to avoid crowds.
Residents, particularly elderly individuals and those with caregiving responsibilities, report a loss of personal space and a decline in quality of life. Public squares and parks, once community meeting points, are increasingly perceived as transit zones for tourists.
Amidst these shifts in neighborhood identity, Bodega La Palma, an emblematic establishment in the Gòtic district operating since 1935, has gained attention following a visit by artist Rosalía. The bodega represents the traditional commercial continuity that exists within the dense, high-pressure environment of Barcelona’s historic center.
