Barcelona Spain Temple groundbreaking set for September 2026

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has announced that the groundbreaking ceremony for the Barcelona Spain Temple will take place on Saturday, September 19, 2026. Elder James W. McConkie III, a General Authority Seventy and counselor in the Europe Central Area presidency, will preside over the event.

This will be the second temple in Spain, following the Madrid Spain Temple which was dedicated in 1999. The new temple is planned as a single-story building of approximately 27,500 square feet located in Sant Cugat de Vallès, a municipality north of Barcelona. The site, spanning 5.4 acres, is also expected to include patron housing, an arrival center, and a distribution center.

The announcement comes as the Church marks the 50th anniversary of the organization of the Spain Barcelona Mission. Currently, there are approximately 72,000 Latter-day Saints living in Spain, organized into about 150 wards and branches.
