Barcelona to begin Diagonal tram connection works in summer 2027
Barcelona Mayor Jaume Collboni has announced that construction to connect the tramway along Diagonal Avenue is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2027. The project aims to link the TramBesòs and TramBaix lines, allowing continuous travel from the Besòs area to Llobregat without changing transport modes.
The municipal government has approved 120 million euros for urban redevelopment and the expansion of the Diagonal collector. This infrastructure work is designed to increase water flow capacity from 108 m³/s to 168 m³/s, reducing flood risks and improving climate resilience. The Generalitat de Catalunya will fund the tramway network and rolling stock with a budget of approximately 117 million euros.
The project includes the construction of three new stations—Diagonal-Cinc d'Oros, Balmes, and Casanova—and the adaptation of the Francesc Macià interchange. If construction begins as planned, the full connection is expected to be operational by 2031.
