Barcelona to offer subsidies for electric and cargo bikes

The Barcelona City Council has initiated the process to provide financial aid for the purchase of electric bicycles and cargo bikes. The program aims to reduce the cost barrier for sustainable mobility, offering subsidies of up to 40% of the purchase price.

Subsidies will be capped at 400 euros for urban pedal-assist electric bicycles and 800 euros for cargo bikes. The initiative is open to both residents registered in Barcelona and companies with a registered social address in the city.

While the official call for applications is expected to be published in 2027, purchases made starting December 1, 2026, will be eligible for the aid. The city has allocated a total of 4 million euros for this program, distributed as 1 million euros annually over four years through 2030.

To qualify, bicycles must be new and equipped with specific safety features, including a bell, lights, and reflectors, with a maximum power of 250W and an assistance cutoff at 25 km/h.
