Barcelona metropolitan transport to allow contactless mobile and card payments
The Metropolitan Transport Authority (ATM) is preparing a tender for a new direct access payment system for public transport in the Barcelona metropolitan area. In the coming months, users of the metro, bus, and tram will be able to validate trips using credit cards, debit cards, or compatible mobile devices.
The initiative aims to simplify travel for occasional users and visitors by removing the need to purchase or top up physical transport cards in advance. The public tender is expected to be resolved by the end of the year, with a progressive deployment of technological solutions for station and vehicle readers scheduled to conclude by 2027.
