Barcelona’s signing of Hamza Abdelkarim triggers Egyptian club’s €1.5 million solidarity claim

Barcelona activated a €1.5 million option to sign 18‑year‑old Egyptian striker Hamza Abdelkarim from Al Ahly, completing his permanent move to the Spanish club. Shortly after, Al‑Kom Al‑Ahmar, a former youth club that helped develop Abdelkarim, lodged a formal complaint with the Egyptian Football Federation, asserting a right to a share of the transfer fee under FIFA’s solidarity payment rules.

Al‑Kom Al‑Ahmar’s football director Diaa Bahgat stated, “The paperwork is fully in order, with the player’s signature, his father’s signature and his father’s fingerprint,” and added that the club sees Abdelkarim “like my little brother” but must protect its financial rights. The club emphasized that it seeks compensation without jeopardising the player’s development.

The dispute highlights the growing financialisation of youth talent in football, where training clubs increasingly claim monetary stakes in future transfers. If recognised, the claim could set a precedent for similar solidarity demands across the sport.
