Barclays expands Anthropic Claude AI integration across global operations
Barclays is expanding its partnership with Anthropic to integrate Claude AI systems across its global operations. The bank aims to accelerate software development, modernize legacy systems, and improve operational efficiency. Barclays plans for Claude Code adoption to reach 50% of its developers by the end of 2026, with a majority of software engineers expected to use it by 2027.
Currently, the bank utilizes Claude for internal information retrieval via a RAG-based assistant used by over 16,000 employees, and for processing approximately 120,000 emails daily in its Global Markets division. The rollout is being managed with specific governance, security controls, and human oversight to meet regulatory requirements.
In tandem with these enterprise deployments, Anthropic has introduced a “mods” system for Claude Code. These TypeScript-based modules allow users to customize the tool’s behavior, UI, and features by hooking into real-time events. While these mods provide extensibility, Anthropic noted that the interception points used for customization are the same points where prompts, tool outputs, and permissions are determined.
